The UK is on the verge of striking a minerals agreement with Greenland, three sources told Politico.
The Arctic territory, part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has long attracted international interest, Donald Trump even floated the idea of annexing Greenland during his presidency.
Beneath its ice, Greenland holds between 40 and 50 minerals considered critical for US national security. Resources such as uranium and graphite are vital for manufacturing and supply chains.
Washington has identified Greenland as strategically important for its abundant natural resources, which could help break China’s dominance over rare minerals.
According to sources close to the talks, the UK is expected to announce a deal with Greenland soon, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer likely to sign the agreement this week.
Earlier this week, Trade Minister Chris Bryant hinted that negotiations with a country were already under way.
