United Nations sanctions against Iran have been reinstated following the failure of nuclear negotiations, a move strongly condemned by Tehran.

As of Saturday, the sanctions are back in force, three months after Israel and the United States bombed nuclear facilities in the Middle Eastern country in an effort to prevent Iran from advancing its nuclear programme and developing ballistic missiles.

Following the return of sanctions, the local currency, the rial, fell sharply against the US dollar, while the government denounced the measures, warning that they would further damage the country’s economy.

The reactivation of annulled resolutions is legally baseless and unjustifiable. All countries must refrain from recognising this illegal situation,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

European and US diplomats stressed that the diplomatic route remains open despite the reimposition of sanctions.

Washington has urged Tehran to resume direct talks, while the French, British, and German foreign ministries said in a joint statement that they would continue to pursue a diplomatic solution.
