Donald Trump has threatened to deploy the US military to Nigeria if attacks on Christians do not cease.
In a post shared on the social network Truth Social, the American president urged the Nigerian government to act against what he described as ongoing massacres, warning that the United States would halt its aid if no action was taken.
The US military “may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Department of War was ready to take action if Nigeria failed to respond appropriately.
Islamic extremism in Nigeria first drew global attention when the Boko Haram group abducted 276 schoolgirls, most of them Christian.
A spokesperson for Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said that Trump and the African leader are expected to meet “in the coming days,” without providing further details.
