Polish prosecutors have charged a pair of Russian citizens with spying for Moscow, with one of them also accused of planning to send a parcel bomb via courier.

On Monday, Polish authorities formally charged the two Russians with “participating in Russian intelligence activities and passing on information to that intelligence service which could have caused damage to the Republic of Poland.”

The suspects have been identified as Igor R. and Irina R.. Prosecutors allege that Igor, along with another Russian national and two Ukrainians, attempted to send a parcel bomb by courier in July 2024.

The parcel contained explosive devices and materials in the form of nitroglycerin, as well as concealed military-grade electric detonators and initiating devices,” prosecutors said in a statement.

“In connection with sending this package, Igor R. was charged with causing an imminent danger to the life or health of many people or to property on a large scale in the form of an explosion of explosives,” they added.

Warsaw has said that Poland has been the target of repeated espionage attempts and hybrid warfare orchestrated by Moscow since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
