The Maldives has introduced a nationwide smoking ban for anyone born after January 2007, becoming the first country in the world to implement a generational tobacco policy.

The initiative, championed by President Mohamed Muizzu, came into effect on 1 November and aims to “protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation,” according to the Ministry of Health.

Under the new provision, individuals born on or after 1 January 2007 are prohibited from purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products within the Maldives. The ban applies to all forms of tobacco, and retailers are required to verify age prior to sale,” the ministry said in a statement.

The law also applies to visitors in the island nation, located south of Sri Lanka.

In addition, the ministry plans to reduce the import, sale, and distribution of tobacco products. E-cigarettes and vaping products are also covered under the new legislation.
