Spotify has announced a collaboration with leading record labels to develop artificial intelligence tools in a “responsible” way.

The streaming giant will secure music licensing rights from the three major labels, Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group.

However, critics of the initiative argue that introducing AI tools to the platform will ultimately mean less revenue for human artists.

The Swedish company has not provided further details about the specific tools, but Spotify has already begun work on their development.

This move comes amid growing backlash from artists such as Dua Lipa, Elton John and Paul McCartney, who have criticised companies for using their songs to train AI models without their consent or any financial compensation.

Spotify has stressed, however, that artists, songwriters and rights holders will be “properly compensated for uses of their work and transparently credited for their contributions.”

Technology should always serve artists, not the other way around,” said Spotify’s co-president Alex Norström.
