The Danish government is planning to introduce a ban on social media use for children under the age of 15, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Tuesday.

In a speech to parliament, Frederiksen argued that social media is “stealing children’s childhood“, pointing out that many 13- and 14-year-olds already own a smartphone.

We have unleashed a monster. I hope that you here in the chamber will help tighten the law so that we take better care of our children here in Denmark,” she said.

However, the prime minister did not provide further details on the contents of the proposed legislation or when it would be brought before parliament for a vote.

Last year, a citizens’ initiative that gathered more than 50,000 signatures called for the banning of TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

Frederiksen’s announcement comes as the Social Democratic party has already expressed its support for introducing a social media ban for those under 15.
