Denmark has claimed that drones flying over several of its airports were the work of a “professional actor“, though there is currently no evidence that Russia orchestrated the incidents.
Aalborg Airport was forced to close for several hours on Wednesday after green lights were spotted above the site. Billund Airport was also briefly shut down.
Defence minister Troels Lund Poulsen told a press conference that this “hybrid attack” formed part of a “systematic operation“.
Drones pose a serious risk to airports, as they can collide with aircraft during take-off and landing.
The minister also described the incidents as “staged provocations“, suggesting they could be used as a pretext to escalate tensions in relation to the war in Ukraine.
In recent weeks, Poland, Romania and Estonia have all reported violations of their airspace by Russian drones or fighter jets.
Moscow has denied breaching Estonian airspace and insisted that Russian drones entering Poland was not deliberate.
