The Pentagon deployed an aircraft carrier to the Caribbean Sea on Friday as the Trump administration steps up action against drug trafficking.

The USS Gerald Ford, which can carry dozens of stealth fighters as well as surveillance aircraft, has been sent to the area along with other warships to stem the flow of drugs by sea.

In recent weeks the Pentagon has been targeting vessels suspected of carrying drug consignments.

This bolstered naval presence “will bolster US capacity to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities that compromise the safety and prosperity of the United States homeland and our security in the western hemisphere,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement.

Donald Trump said the next stage would be to target land-based sites in Venezuela as tensions between the two countries continue to rise. “The land is going to be next. The land drugs are much more dangerous for them. It’s going to be much more dangerous. You’ll be seeing that soon,” the president said.
