ChatGPT could soon face tighter regulation in Europe as the number of its monthly users has now reached 120 million.

The AI chatbot, created by OpenAI, may be subject to stricter oversight, according to a European Commission spokesperson speaking on Wednesday.

Major technology companies are already under close scrutiny and must comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to curb the spread of illegal content and products online.

Platforms with more than 45 million monthly users, such as Amazon, TikTok, X, and Facebook, are required to meet transparency obligations and pay higher supervisory fees, allowing the Commission to ensure that companies are actively tackling prohibited content.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, OpenAI said that over the past six months, up to 30 September, it had “approximately 120.4 million average monthly active recipients in the European Union.

The figure reflects a monthly average of EU-based users accessing ChatGPT’s search capability over the past six months, and not ChatGPT usage as a whole,” the report added.
