Police and anti-government demonstrators clashed as protesters tried to storm the presidential palace. Security forces used water cannons and pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
The Caucasus nation has been experiencing heightened tensions since the Georgian Dream party won last year’s parliamentary elections, a vote the pro-European opposition denounced as rigged.
The protests took place on the same day as local elections, which were largely boycotted by opposition groups in response to government actions.
On Saturday, crowds carrying Georgian and European flags marched towards the presidential palace in the capital, Tbilisi.
Since Georgian Dream came to power, the government has cracked down on activists, opposition members and independent media.
