Munich airport in Germany was forced to shut down for several hours after drones were spotted near the airport and close to military infrastructure.

Air traffic controllers initially reduced operations before completely closing the country’s second busiest airport on Thursday.

As a result, 17 flights were unable to take off, affecting 3,000 passengers, while 15 incoming flights bound for Bavaria were diverted to other airports in Germany and Austria.

Germany’s Defence Ministry also reported drone activity over the Erding military site, located 12 kilometres from Munich Airport. The airbase has previously been used for drone testing.

Local police have opened an investigation, but no suspects have been detained. Air traffic at Munich Airport resumed on Friday morning.

This latest drone incursion follows similar unexplained drone sightings over Poland, Romania, and Denmark in recent weeks.
