Europe is currently facing “the most difficult and dangerous situation” since the Second World War, the Danish Prime Minister said at a European summit being held in Copenhagen.
Mette Frederiksen is hosting European leaders at a meeting focused on military support for Ukraine, as well as recent Russian drone incursions into the airspace of several countries.
“I hope that everybody recognises now that there is a hybrid war. One day it’s Poland, the next it’s Denmark, and next week it will probably be somewhere else that we see sabotage or drones flying. I think we are in the most difficult and dangerous situation since the Second World War,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
At the same time, a tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” was intercepted by the French navy and diverted to Saint-Nazaire in Brittany. An investigation has been opened by the Brest prosecutor.
On his arrival in the Danish capital, French President Emmanuel Macron said it was “a very good thing” that a formal investigation had begun.
Following a series of drone sightings last week, Denmark has banned the use of civilian drones for the entire week.
