A Ukrainian national suspected of sabotaging the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in 2022 has been arrested in Poland, a spokesperson for the Warsaw prosecutor’s office has confirmed.
The man, identified as Volodymyr Z, was detained in the town of Pruszków before being transferred to Warsaw, according to reports from RMF FM radio.
No further details have been released about the suspect, who was subject to an arrest warrant issued by Germany, prosecutor’s office spokesman Piotr Antoni Skiba said.
Last month, another Ukrainian man was detained in Italy in connection with the explosions that damaged the two undersea pipelines carrying gas from Russia to Germany.
The suspect’s lawyer, Tymoteusz Paprocki, told RMF FM: “Taking into consideration the full-scale war in Ukraine and the fact that Nord Stream is owned by the Russian company Gazprom, which finances these activities, the defence currently does not see any possibility of pressing charges against anyone who participated in these events.“
Paprocki added that he was not yet certain of his client’s involvement in the sabotage, as he is still awaiting official information from Germany.
