Instagram has become the third app in the world to reach three billion users, joining Facebook and WhatsApp, both owned by Meta.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the milestone eight months after Facebook hit the same symbolic figure.

The news comes as Instagram revealed a redesign of its app, which will see the home screen revamped to prioritise messaging and Reels.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the changes were designed to support the platform’s growth.

“Messaging, Reels, and recommendations have driven most of our recent growth. So, over the next few months, we’re going to better organise the app around those features,” he wrote in a post.

“We’ll soon start testing a way for you to tune your algorithm by adding and removing topics based on your interests, starting with Reels. We hope this will be a meaningful new way to shape what you see,” he added.
