The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) has warned that hackers are deploying ransomware to disrupt air traffic at airports.
In recent weeks, several European airports have experienced serious software issues, particularly with systems handling automated check-ins and passenger registration.
ENISA told the BBC on Monday that malicious software was being used to cripple airports’ automated systems.
“The type of ransomware has been identified. Law enforcement is involved to investigate,” the agency said in a statement to Reuters.
Late last week, the UK’s busiest airport, Heathrow, suffered major disruption after a cyberattack targeted its check-in and boarding systems.
Similar problems have also been reported at Brussels Airport in Belgium and Berlin Airport in Germany.
