Denmark announced on Tuesday a plan to boost funding for Greenland, allocating €210 million for investments in infrastructure and healthcare services.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous Arctic territory belonging to Denmark, has long attracted international interest, including from Donald Trump who openly expressed his desire to purchase the strategically located territory during his presidency.

The additional Danish funds will be used to build a new airstrip in Ittoqqortoormiit in eastern Greenland and to develop a deep-water port in Qaqortoq in the south.

This financial support comes as the territory’s economy faces decline, driven by falling fishery exports, an ageing population, and heavy dependence on Danish companies.

This deal aims to support a self-sustaining Greenland with, among other things, long-term investments,” said Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen in a joint statement with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
