The final stage of the Vuelta was abandoned after pro-Palestinian protesters entered several sections of the course in the streets of Madrid.

Protesters toppled barriers and repeatedly occupied the route the riders were meant to take, despite a heavy police presence.

As a result, Jonas Vingegaard, who was leading the overall standings going into the final stage, claimed victory in the competition for the first time in his career.

The peloton was brought to a halt 60 km from the finish in the Spanish capital. The race had already been disrupted by similar protests earlier in the competition, which had led to some stages being shortened.

This demonstration also prevented the podium ceremony for the final stage and the presentation of the leader’s jerseys.

It’s a pity that such a moment of eternity was taken from us. I was looking forward to celebrating this overall win with my team and the fans. Everyone has the right to protest, but not in a way that influences or endangers our race,” said Vingegaard.

Clashes between protesters and police continued after the race was called off.
