Romania has reported that a Russian drone illegally entered its airspace, a few days after Poland shot down several Russian drones that had crossed into its territory.
Several Romanian fighter jets were dispatched to the area where the violation occurred to monitor the situation. The Kremlin has not commented on the incident.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, said the incursion could not have been accidental and described it as “an obvious expansion of the war by Russia.”
In a statement, the Ministry of National Defence (Romania) said two F-16 fighter jets had been deployed near its border with Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since February 2022.
Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, called the incident “yet another unacceptable breach of an EU member state’s sovereignty.”
Over the weekend, Poland placed its air defence forces on high alert after Russian drones entered its airspace in the middle of last week.
