Asylum seekers who are in employment could be required to pay €238 per week to cover the cost of their accommodation, under a plan currently being considered by the Irish government.

As of July, 32,774 asylum seekers were living in state-provided housing in the Republic of Ireland, as the number of asylum applications has continued to rise in recent years.

The proposal to charge working asylum seekers forms part of a broader government strategy aimed at reducing the number of future asylum claims.

According to BBC Northern Ireland, the government is considering imposing a weekly charge of up to €238 on employed asylum seekers, a move supported by Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan.

The proposal is expected to be discussed by ministers later this week.
