Moldova has urged the European Union for “clarity and commitment” regarding its accession process.
The country, which applied almost simultaneously with Ukraine, has shown “determination and delivered on its commitments,” Moldovan president Maia Sandu said in an email to Euronews.
“What we need now is sustained engagement and clarity from the EU to keep enlargement as a strategic priority and to maintain the momentum for those who deliver,” she wrote.
Moldova and Ukraine have already started the first stage of discussions, known as the Fundamentals, which covers key issues such as democracy, security, human rights, and the judicial system.
Sandu argued in her email that the country’s EU application has taken on “a deeper meaning” since the start of the war in Ukraine.
“For years, our European path was guided by the hope of development, to modernise our country, access the EU market and strengthen the economy. It is now also a path of security and stability. Moldova can survive and consolidate as a democracy only as part of the EU,” she explained.
