Instagram and Facebook are in violation of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) concerning the handling of illegal content, moderation, and transparency, according to a preliminary investigation by the European Commission.
The Commission found that Meta, the company that owns both platforms, had implemented misleading obstacles that make it difficult for users to report the spread of illegal material.
If a formal ruling confirms the breach, both platforms could face a fine of up to 6% of their global annual revenue.
Meta has time to address the issues before the Commission delivers its final decision.
Recently, both Meta and TikTok have been criticised for their “burdensome procedures and tools” that prevent researchers from accessing public data.
