The White House has criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision to award the prestigious prize to someone other than Donald Trump.
This year’s laureate is María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition politician, a choice that US officials described as politically motivated.
“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” wrote Steven Cheung, a Trump aide and the White House’s director of communications.
Despite being overlooked, the US president will continue “making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives,” Cheung added.
Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, who is leading economic negotiations with Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuelan government, also expressed his discontent, writing on X that the Nobel Prize “died years ago“.
In recent weeks, the president has repeatedly insisted that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering a ceasefire in Palestine after two years of conflict.
In its announcement of this year’s laureate, the Norwegian committee highlighted the growing number of countries living under authoritarian regimes, a statement widely interpreted as a veiled criticism of Trump’s current presidency.
