The European Union has said it must build and develop its own artificial intelligence platforms in order to end its reliance on foreign entities, particularly the United States and China.

According to the Financial Times, which has seen an initial draft of the proposal, the “Apply AI Strategy” aims to promote AI tools designed in Europe to boost the bloc’s competitiveness. The strategy also highlights the need to strengthen AI in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing and defence.

The European Commission wants to “reinforce European sovereignty in AI” by accelerating the development and use of AI-powered technologies.

The proposal, which is still subject to change, is due to be presented on Tuesday by the EU’s tech chief, Henna Virkkunen.

In recent years, Europe has become fertile ground for the growth of AI companies such as France’s Mistral and German defence technology firm Helsing.
