The European Union will introduce measures that will cut steel import quotas by almost half, Commissioner for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy Stéphane Séjourné announced.

Speaking at a steel summit in Brussels on Wednesday, Séjourné made the pledge before an audience of industry representatives and trade unions.

Secondly, we will significantly increase customs tariffs, in line with what our American and Canadian partners are doing,” Séjourné added.

The United States has already imposed 50% tariffs on all steel imports, as well as on products manufactured from steel.

The steel industry has been calling for a 50% cut in foreign steel imports, along with 50% tariffs on any imports exceeding the set quotas.

For the measures to come into force, they must be approved by both EU member states and the European Parliament.
