London mayor Sadiq Khan has sharply criticised Donald Trump after the US president used his platform at the United Nations this week to describe him as “terrible“.
Trump’s remarks drew anger from several Labour Party members, including health secretary Wes Streeting, who defended Khan as someone who fights for diversity of background and opinion.
Responding on Wednesday, Khan said: “I think President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic and he’s Islamophobic.“
The London mayor also took a subtle swipe at UK prime minister Keir Starmer, noting his failure to condemn Trump’s comments.
In his UN speech, Trump had declared: “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed. Now they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that.“
Despite the remarks, Khan stressed that London continues to welcome many American visitors and that investment from across the Atlantic remains strong.
