Donald Trump has said that Ukraine could retake all the territories captured by Russia since the start of the war in February 2022.
In a post on Truth Social, the US president also argued that Russia’s economy was struggling after three years of Western sanctions.
“Ukraine would be able to take back their country in its original form and, who knows, maybe even go further than that! Putin and Russia are in BIG economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act,” he wrote, adding that the US would continue supplying NATO with weapons to purchase.
Following talks between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Trump at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the Ukrainian leader told reporters that the United States was prepared to provide security guarantees once the conflict was over, though he gave no further details.
As of today, Russian forces partially control several regions in eastern Ukraine, including Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, but the Ukrainian president has vowed to reclaim the territory.
