Polish aircraft were deployed as a “preventive” measure to bolster national airspace following an incursion by Russian drones earlier this week.
In the middle of the week, several Russian drones violated Polish airspace before being shot down by Polish and NATO air defence systems. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied that the incursion had been deliberate.
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command stated on X that air defence systems were placed on maximum alert for several hours on Saturday afternoon.
Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, said that “preventive air operations” had been launched in Polish airspace due to the threat posed by Russian drones targeting Ukraine, Poland’s neighbouring country.
Later in the day, the Polish military command confirmed that the alert had been lifted.
